I had bought a package of Envelope Cards several years ago. Its a card that folds up to an envelope - a fun design in one piece. I could have added Designer Series Papers - one of my favorite Stampin' UP! products - to add a theme and color to these already made cards, but like most card designs I see, I like to make it my own.
In August of 2022, Julie Heitz of Quilt Cards & More, also demonstrated a similar design, and it inspired me to take out the ones I bought and see how to make it more unique. Julie's Envelope card was perfect for writing a short letter, folding it up, sealing it and sending it off - one piece.
But the one I bought had a pocket - that's what I wanted to focus on along with adding coordinated papers. And I knew as the pattern/design developed in my mind, I'd want to use these for my 14 grandchildren and 6 adult children/spouses this Christmas!
First look at the one I bought. It looks like an envelope, right? Then opens to a card with pocket.
I have already added Designer Papers to this one, but it came totally white. It was the size of the pocket that made me think I would need a 12" piece of cardstock. Since I wanted to share this pattern, I thought it'd be more practical to size it to an 8 1/2" x 11" since not everyone keeps 12x12" papers. That's why you're getting both sizes in the measurements. (8 1/2" x 11" instructions in parenthesis). So read on to discover this fun design and how you can give a card/gift card holder that folds up to an envelope all in one.
Finished/Folded size is 5 1/2" x 4 1/4". It will fit in an A2 envelope w/o too many embellishments or layers. I've also added a belly band or belt.
Directions
Use one 12x12" piece of cardstock - it must be the strength of cardstock to score and fold (One 8 1/2" x 11")
Cut 12" into a 5 1/2 x 12". Set the other piece aside to make another card. (To use an 8 1/2" x 11" piece of cardstock, cut one 5 1/2" x 11 piece.)
Set aside the 1" x 12" piece. (Set aside the remaining 3" piece from the 8 1/2 x 11")
Use one 5 1/2" x 12" piece. SCORE on the long side: 1 3/4", 6", 10" - fold them all. (For a 5 1/2" x 11" piece of cardstock, SCORE at 1 5/8, 5 5/8, 9 3/4".)
Looking at the Landscape/Horizontal design with the 5 1/2" measurement at the top,
Fold the 1 1/2" edge down - this is the envelope flap
To make the card for the inside as shown: Cut a piece of DSP (Designer Series Paper) with pattern horizontally, 7 1/2" x 3 1/2", score it at 2 1/2". This paper should coordinate with the pocket layer on the bottom. Cut two white layers at 2 1/4" x 3 1/4".
Bottom section/pocket layer is 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" - choose a paper that coordinates.
Design the outside to coordinate with your inside theme, or for your recipient's favorite past time.
The red base card is no name cardstock. Click here to get to my website and find the suggested products I've used: The Designer papers are Storybook Gnomes, #159615; and Boughs of Holly, #159600; the bow on the belly band is part of the Country Wreaths Dies, #160238, all from the Jun - Dec, Mini Catalog, which will be expiring the end of this year, 2022. Some of these items will be on sale in the "Last Chance" sale beginning Dec. 1, 2022.
Finally, use the remaining strip as a belt or belly band to slide over the Envelope Card to add further interest or to keep this style card closed.
After making one, you will want to use the other piece of your 12x12" to make a second card.
For card #2, turn the card to make a portrait style.
This way, the gift card pocket is on the left instead of the bottom, and the card will open to the right instead of from the top.
Make the inside card for this design 3 3/4" x 10" and score in half. Adjust these measurements depending on your layers.
I used (click here for my website:) Mint Macaron or Soft Succulent Cardstock, Stamp set Inspired Thoughts, #155536, plus die cuts and ovals from Fitting Florets Suite. Designer Paper #161814, and Gold Adhesive Swirls 161822, available while supplies last through Dec 2022, and Dies, Framed Florets 160623 and stamps available Jan 4 2023 with new Mini Catalog.
It would be smart to have a few of these envelope cards on hand when you want to give more than a card. Remember that it fits into the A2 envelope, without the belly band.
This would be a great design to enclose photos, flat treat, or a letter in the pocket.
I can't wait to get started! Which style will you make? I'd love to see your Envelope Card.
