Stamping With Friends - Blog Hop - Inspiration from Around the World!

Hello there!   This week's challenge is to make a project from a kit the way it is designed, and then my favorite way to create - make an alternative project with the same supplies!

My kit is the FROG & FRIENDS KIT. The one thing that attracted me to this kit - is of course, its made of paper, but the FROG & FRIENDS are an activity, an action time for young and old.   When I first saw it - the kit that makes two each of a frog, a shark, or a fish, I knew that my youngest grandchildren (8 y.o) or my ladies in card class (mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers) would have fun with it!

Its that game where you try to swing or toss the ball at the end of the string into the cup.  In this kit, the frog has a plastic bug, the shark as a plastic fish, and the fish has a plastic worm.  Each includes all that's necessary to create a cup-like structure (frog, fish or shark) with a string that's attached to its bait.

Two of the frogs were created and taken home by my granddaughter Natalie.

The Shark is going to be made into a baby card - Baby Shark, doo doo, doo doo to doo, Baby Shark!

My project today is the FROG is 3D.   This is exactly what I saw when I first laid eyes on this kit

FROG stands for Forever. Rely. On. God.

 In June a boy that attended our Art Day Camp at church told everyone how he loves frogs - he has frog shirts, and knows all about frogs.   Then he told us what FROG meant - I thought it meant Friends Rely on God.  This boy recently got hurt with a fall forward on his bike, so this 3D card is for him.   

The base of the card: is 8 1/2" by 5 1/2".   

Score the card in 4 even sections: on the 8 1/2" side score at 2 1/8" so that you have 4 even sections across.  Fold it like an "M" so that the center goes away and the 2 sides go forward.

I used Lily Pond Lane (2024 annual catalog) paper.  

Layers:  2" x 5 1/2" to fill the space. 

Inside of Frog - Cover the reverse side of the frog first because the reverse side is red.   The reason for this is that the red catches your attention when you look at the card.  

Legs: Attach the legs LAST

Attach the two outside layers of paper to the base First. 

Attach the frog body: with the frog flat - in other words DO NOT assemble the frog as instructions for the game - center it at the inside of the card base folds, then use tear & tape to attach it so it sticks out as the example shows.   

THEN add the layer of paper over the frog so you don't see how its attached.  Does that make sense?

Once I got the frog attached to the card base, I folded the frog flat so it could if possible go in an envelope. 

Legs: attach the legs just at the fold, so that they over lap onto the card base.  

Use Ala Mode Dies for the letters F R O G and Courage & Faith stamps.  

(I'm not sure I want to give F.R.O.G. away now that he's finished). 

Another option for any of these creatures would be to make it as its designed without the game piece attached.   Then attach it to the outside of a gift bag with a little candy bar.  Then use the string and the plastic bait as part of the ribbons that you tie around the handle.  

(P.S.  I must admit that I've never gotten the bait in the mouth of any of these!   I better go back to using the ball and the cup game!) I love paper and inky things.   For more information on paper crafting and getting a product discount, click on the links above.

WATER COLOR ONE SHEET WONDER with 2022-2024 In-Colors

Today's focus is on the retiring In-Colors, 2022-2024, Parakeet Party, Sweet Sorbet, Starry Sky, Orchid Oasis, Tahitian Tide.  If you're new to Stampin' Up!, these are shades of the four color families that are revealed each year when the new Annual Catalog comes out in the spring. These colors are the focus of many of the new Designer Series Papers (DSP), along with coordinating cardstock, ribbons, embellishments, inks and markers.  

As a fairly new Demonstrator, but a paper crafter since I was a child, in order to have all the current colors of inks at my fingertips, I purchase the Stampin' Write Markers in the new In-Colors each spring, then invest in the ink pads of my favorite colors.  I recommend this to all new crafters so that they can have the colors without the big investment all at once.

My project today is with the use of the 2022-2024 In-Color Stampin' Write Markers.  They are water-based, and can be used just like ink.  I am drawn to inky techniques, especially water coloring, and the Stampin' Up! Inks - Stampin' Write! markers and the liquid refills are just perfect for this.

The design of my card today has been called a "one-sheet wonder" which does also apply to many other designs made with one piece of paper. I was inspired by the technique but I do not know who created this 4-on-a-page design. This OSW (one sheet wonder) is unique to each person who does it - no two prints are alike. You are the artist.  You are creating one 8 1/2 x 11 print that you will divide into four or more top layers for your cards.

All design patterns are meant as an idea.  You take the idea and make it your own - that is expected, that's why we share!  There's an acronym, CASE, which you often see, that describes this: C is Copy; A is And; S is Share; and E is everything.  And while it is expected that you will CASE the millions of designs you see, it is also expected that you will give credit to the person who inspired you to create your design. I prefer to say that I "was inspired by".  

The products listed are what I used but you can use what you have or what you are inspired to try.

Here's the supplies I used:

1 - 8 1/2" x 11" piece of white cardstock, scored in quarters. Score at 5 1/2" on the 11" side; score at 4 1/4" on the 8 1/2" side - Do Not fold or cut.

Cardstock - white for the "one sheet wonder" print, 8 1/2 x 11", and one for your base - 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" is what I used.

2022-2024 In-Color Stampin' Write Markers - I made one page each of the Starry Sky and Sweet Sorbet; combined Tahitian Tide and Orchid Oasis on one, then used the green (Parakeet Party) for the leaves on each.

Sentiments, Ribbons, Embellishments of your choice

Ink the Stamp like this: 

Mount your stamp on a stamping block of appropriate size.   (I prefer to use my hand as the stamping block, which gives me the flexibility of moving it ever so slightly to fill in a spot.) With the stamp face up on your work surface, use the wide or brush end of the marker; hold on a slant and rub it across the stamp, adding ink to areas. Make sure not to be using the tip of the marker.        

                                                           

This process is done quickly, like scribbling.  Because its artful, water coloring look, you aren't taking time to make sure you get only the leaves with green (Parakeet Party) or the rose petals and buds with only the red (Sweet Sorbet) or any of the three other colors (Tahitian Tide, Orchid Oasis, or Starry Sky). Scribble fast.  

Stamp your image to make your OSW print:

Now pick up your block with stamp and move it away from your work surface, spritz with a few squirts of water and quickly turn it over and stamp along the center score line of your paper.   Do this once or twice with each time you ink it with the marker and spritz with water.  Repeat the process until you have the entire piece stamped the way you wish.                                                              

The stamped images will dry quickly.  Once the entire sheet is dry and you're satisfied with the look, cut them into 4 pieces.  Trim your design accordingly and mount as the top layer on white or coordinating cardstock.   Add a second stamped image, ribbon, embellishments, and sentiments according to your design.

Here's my OSW (one sheet wonder) in each of the four In-Colors that are retiring April 30: Orchid Oasis and Tahitian Tide,  Starry Sky, Sweet Sorbet, then using Parakeet Party on each for the leaves images.

KNOW Your 4: Plus 1 Book Binding & Easel Book Binding

 JULY 2023 FOCUS: Know Your 4 – a card for any reason or any season - Book Binding Design

Card Base: 4 ¼” x 11, score in half at 5 ½”

Measure 1 “ over to the right from the folds and score. This becomes the book binding part of the card. 

This card is designed to use lengthwise, but you could turn it so that the card opens up, with the fold on top. 

                                                    

The card is an A2 size – 4 ¼” x 5 ½”.  Because of the 1” binding section, the front will be 1” shorter, making it 4 ¼” x 4 ½”.  The layer for the front then will be 4 x 4 ¼”; and the layer for the 1” binding section is 4 x ¾”. You can choose the same Designer paper for both sections or you can choose the reverse or another coordinating piece.

But before you attach the binding section down, decide if you want to add ribbon.

To add ribbon, you can slide it in between the layers at this 1” section.  Cut your ribbon to 6 ½” or more, wrap  it around the front and put the edges in the inside, then attach it with 2 strips of Tear & Tape to secure this section.

If you don’t add ribbon, secure this binding section with the Tear & Tape.

Now choose a sentiment for the front.  Add a die cut, punch art or stamped image.

This is another easy card design. A favorite for any reason or season.

Stepped-up Version of the Book Binding Design, an Easel Book Binding Design.

To make this a deluxe or stepped up design, do add the ribbon, after adding a ¾” x 4” layer to the binding section.

Next, make this Book Binder card front into a Easel card. Score the front of the card in half diagonally, from the upper right corner to the lower left corner, but stop at the score line of the binder section.

                            

To remember which angle to score, once this is folded, you want it to face down.  If you score from the upper left to the lower right, then the folded section faces up and out – this is the error.

Top layer is still the same size, 4 x 4 ¼”, but cut it in half on an angle – upper right to lower left.   Attach to the front of the card, leaving a ¼” edge on each triangle section.

Push up this angle section so it stands up, making it an easel design.   To keep this easel piece standing up, attach an image with dimensionals so it stands up behind it. 

Add punched art, stamped image or die cut to the right side of the angle, making sure  it doesn’t stick out of the edge and not fit in the envelope.

KNOW YOUR 4 - Card #3: Windowpane

 KNOW YOUR 4 is my way of introducing four basic designs, especially for beginners, that you can "go to" when you need a quick card. What is your favorite design - the one you'll make when you need a last minute card?

This week's card design is called a window pane.  It can be made from 2 pieces of Designer Series Paper (DSP) each 4 x 5 1/4".

                                        

Either start with this whole piece and cut into "window pane" pieces or gather your smaller pieces (scraps) to make this window pane design.

The Designer Series Papers I used for these cards are from the "One Horse Open Sleigh" with coordinating cardstock; Zoo Crew and Country Side Inn papers, Courage & Faith and Trucking Along stamp sets, with others from retired stamps.  Visit my Stampin' Up! website here, to see these products, an assortment of Designer Series Papers, ribbons and fibers, and stamp sets for sentiments.

I've included these measurements when you start with a 12 x 12 piece of Designer or scrapbook papers.

Starting with a 4 x 5 1/4" piece, cut three or four pieces that are either equal in length or width, and allowing for a quarter of inch of the cardstock layer you put it on top of to show through.
