Inspired by Emma Fawcett over at Emma's Crafty Space, I created this 3D lantern to showcase the trees and deer of the " Grassy Grove" dies, very prevalent in our area. Also included are 3 deer. There are 2 die cuts of the grove and 2 sets of the 3 deer.
Although the first one I made is with 12" cardstock, an 11" piece could be used. Click on the highlighted links to review the Stampin' Up! products I recommend.
Cut 1 - 12 x 5 1/ 2" piece of cardstock. Any of the Neutrals colors would work well with this design.
Center the Grove die so that you can cut two images with a 1/2" space between the two. The color doesn't seem to matter, but dark would be best so that the light comes just through the die cut spaces and not the paper.
In making a second one I realized it might be better to have a larger, up to 1" space between the two die cuts to provide better stability.
If using an 11" piece of cardstock, there will be less to trim off on the ends.
Cut the vellum layer. 11 x 4 1/4". Use 6 glue dots to fasten the vellum to the wrong side of the lantern. Put one glue dot as close as possible to the edge of the die cut:
One each in these spaces: top outside corners; bottom outside corners; middle top edge; middle bottom edge.
Trim off 1/2" of the lantern base end (not bottom) if needed.
Add tear and tape on the outside edge of the side you will put under the other side to attach into a circle.
Do NOT remove the top layer of the tear and tape until ready to connect both ends and make this into a round lantern. By leaving the tape on, you can give it or send it in a Priority Mail envelope (US) that is sturdy enough to keep it flat.
Pick a battery candle that flickers, as it really adds.

Our class started thinking about what other dies could be used. A Nativity die was tried next, as well as a Nativity image from a Cricut. The possibilities seem endless as long as the die cut area doesn't weaken the stability of the cut out. It'd be a real plus to have paper that is longer than 12 inches. Stay tuned for more designs.
This die cut leaves the entire space cut out, so mini glue dots are used to attach it to the vellum. This is one design where having a long piece would be better, or to only cut one image, centered, because the 2 large openings caused the shape to be more oval. Try out your own designs.
With the long dark nights of winter coming, a little light on the windowsill or shelf will be so warming, don't you think?
