Amazing Silhouette Butterfly

Amazing Silhouette Butterfly

I’m in the mood for Spring, so my favorite creature pops into my mind – the butterfly!  I have photos of butterflies all around my house that I’ve taken on vacations, in butterfly houses, walks, and even a photo where the butterflies landed all over me.  That was truly a pleasure. I’ve loved them since I was a child. I have butterfly handwork made by my mother, artwork by my grandkids, and yes, even a tattoo!

In the Jan-Jun 2022 Mini Catalog, the Amazing Silhouettes, there are three cling stamps including a butterfly, though it is a little different perspective.  The Silhouette butterfly, stamps the area around the butterfly, leaving the shape of the body, wings and antennae unstamped, the color of your cardstock.

Do I need just one more butterfly? Yes! So being in the mood for spring, sharing this butterfly card with you is a perfect time. I hope you like it and make a butterfly card to brighten your own spirits.

I have made 2 cards in two colors - Polished Pink and Night of Navy. Choose a color of cardstock where you have the coordinating ink. The Amazing Silhouettes is found on page 40 of the Mini Catalog.  The sentiment I’ve chosen is from Special Moments, which was a Sale A Bration set.   Use any of your favorite sentiment stamps.

This card is an A2 card, which is 8 ½” x 5 ½” cardstock, or ½ of an 8 ½” x 11” piece. Score it at 4 ¼”, fold on the score line and the result is the A2 card 5 ½” x 4 ¼” (Canada and the USA).

Polished Pink is the base.  Use VersaMark, a clear water mark ink, and your choice of a butterfly stamp and stamp them all over the card to create your own subtle background.

I used the Butterfly Brilliance stamp which is a large stamp of many butterflies connected.  You can find this on p. 108 of the Annual Catalog which will retire May 1, 2022, but use any butterfly stamp you have. If you don't have a butterfly stamp, use a flower, bee or dragonfly - they all make me think of Spring too! Set aside the card base to dry.

On a 3” x 4” piece of Basic White cardstock, stamp the Silhouette Butterfly in Polished Pink. (If you don’t have these ink colors, use whatever you have that matches the cardstock)

Take a Wink of Stella brush and color in the silhouette section – that’s the body of the butterfly that is NOT stamped in ink – making the body sparkle in the light.

Tie a 6” piece of Gingham Ribbon around the bottom of this white layer below the stamped image, leaving a 1” space for the sentiment.

Stamp the sentiment on a ½” or so scrap piece of white cardstock and trim so that it fits below the butterfly and above the ribbon.

Attach a black/white print 1” x 5 ½” piece of Designer Series Paper 3/8” over from the fold (as shown); then attach the white layer half way on top of the black/white strip, so that the butterfly background images you stamped show around the top, sides and bottom.

Accent the card by adding one Brushed Brass Butterfly (always add an odd number of bling embellishments)

The Silhouette Butterfly with the Night of Navy ink is done the same except for these differences:

Use a Basic White base card, and a white layer that is 2 ¾” x 3 ¾”. If you're new to layering, this is a good example for you to see that the white layer is 1/4" smaller around, to allow for the Navy.  If you want to make a layer, cut your cardstock 1/4" smaller around; or 1/8" around. Learn this and you won't have to be guessing and measuring each time.

Add a Night of Navy layer that measures  3” x 4”.

Add a metallic blue foil paper from the Waves of the Ocean collection (March 2022).

Add denim ribbon and white twine instead of the gingham ribbon.

Use a With Sympathy sentiment

Add the brass butterfly, don’t forget the Wink of Stella sparkles and you’re all set!

I think I'll make one in every color ink with coordinating cardstock that I have. Or maybe, I'll look at the colors of cardstock that I have, and choose the coordinating ink.  What is your favorite color to work with?   I love pink and black, but then I like greens, and then there's reds, and .......................

  1. My idea for background on white is lightly stamp with night of navy then mount on white. See my photo on CardConnoisseurs on FB.
