EASTER BASKET or BOX, Inspired by Demonstrator, S. Kelli McKey
– inkyhandswarmhearts.com
Use a 6x6 square piece of Designer Series Paper or your
choice of double sided paper that has coordinating print on both sides. (its
worth mentioning, because some are not as beautiful on the other side, and both
sides are seen with this basket pattern)
NOTE that you can use any size square with this
pattern. A 3”, 6, 9 or 12” square uses 1/3
of it as the side measurement. A 3”
square has a 1” side; 6 = 2; 9 = 3, 12 = 4.
6x6 inch square: score at 2” and 4” on each side.
Cut on the score lines at each corner and remove that corner
square.
With a pencil or similar long, smooth tool, curl the edge of each 2” section towards the center.
With a ½” x 12” strip of coordinating paper or cardstock, glue this strip around the top edge of the 4 pieces, which will bring the 4 together to form a basket.
Start in the middle of one of them, bringing the edge of the previous up to the edge of the next but do not overlap. Glue all the way around and overlap just slightly, the end and the beginning.
Cut ½” to ¾” x 8” of same paper or cardstock (or different print) for the handle. Glue it on the same side that you started the top strip and glue to the opposite, choosing to attach inside or outside of the basket.
Add your choice of seasonal die cut or stamped image to one side or both; add a sentiment tag or not.
This is the same pattern as for a box.
Make exactly the same way for a box. Score a 6x6 (or larger square) at 2” & 4” on all sides. Cut out the corner squares on the score lines. Do NOT curl the edges.Choose: wrap the ½” x 12” around the top OR
Do NOT wrap the strip around the top. To keep the box sides up, add a box top. Cut a 3” square piece of coordinating paper. Score at ½” from the edge all the way around. Cut only ONE of the score lines at each corner, and fold in on the score line not cut. This makes a tab.
Glue the tab under the next long ½” segment. (Hard to explain) Do this all the way around. (Photo shows back side with glued tab, and front side with unglued tab)
Once the box top is finished, fold up the 4 sides of the
box, and add the box top which will hold it all together. This makes a fun way to open a surprise, as
when the box top is removed, the sides flop down to reveal your surprise.
This pattern is not a new design, but a fun way to give candy or a small surprise. And it is not limited to Easter. This basket pattern is perfect for a 12x12" piece of paper which makes a 4x4 inch size, which works well to hold cards given as a gift.
I did use an 8x8 square piece of Designer Paper, with 2" sides. The result is a somewhat squatty size basket but would hold a collection of plastic or real colored eggs and sweet treats or bakery.
I used it to collect card kit pieces for an upcoming class.
I hope you try this and enjoy a little basket to brighten a table or corner, or to gift a surprise.
